A space dedicated to exploring movement as a practice of awareness and integration
How a vision of conscious movement became a space for exploration and learning
Makana began with a simple observation: many people move through life disconnected from their bodies. Whether sitting at desks, rushing through daily tasks, or following exercise routines without awareness, the natural intelligence of movement often gets lost.
We created this studio as a response to that disconnection. Our space is designed for people who want to rediscover their relationship with movement, not through force or competition, but through gentle exploration and gradual development.
The name "Makana" reflects our philosophy. It represents the idea of movement as a gift we give ourselves—an opportunity to learn, grow, and develop awareness through physical practice.
The foundations that guide our approach
We believe in building capacity slowly and sustainably. Rather than pushing for immediate results, we focus on creating conditions where natural development can occur. Each practice builds on previous experiences, allowing your body to integrate new patterns safely.
Your body contains wisdom about how it needs to move. Through paying attention to sensations, comfort, and ease, you learn to trust your body's feedback. We guide you in developing this internal listening rather than imposing external ideals.
Each session is an opportunity to explore rather than perform. We encourage curiosity about how your body moves, what feels natural, and what new possibilities might emerge. There are no right or wrong movements, only discoveries.
The ultimate goal is not what happens during practice, but how movement awareness transfers to your daily activities. We help you discover ways to bring ease and efficiency into all your movements, from sitting to walking to reaching.
Understanding movement from an internal perspective
"Your body is not just an object moving through space—it is space itself. When you begin to sense your body from the inside, you discover dimensions of awareness that transform how you move."
Most people think of their body from the outside, as something they see in a mirror. We work with a different perspective: sensing your body as a three-dimensional volume from within. This shift in awareness opens new possibilities for movement.
When you close your eyes and feel your body from the inside, you begin to notice the space your ribs create as you breathe, the length of your spine, the weight of your limbs. This internal sensing—called interoception—becomes a guide for natural, efficient movement.
As you develop this internal awareness, you also become more conscious of how your body relates to external space. How far can you reach comfortably? How do you orient yourself when you turn? These spatial relationships inform every movement you make.
Through practice, you learn to sense these relationships more clearly, which allows you to move with greater ease and precision in any environment.
How instructors support your movement journey
Our instructors serve as guides rather than directors. Instead of telling you exactly what to do, they offer suggestions, ask questions, and help you notice what's happening in your body. This approach puts you in the driver's seat of your own learning.
An instructor might ask, "What do you notice when you move this way?" or suggest, "Try moving more slowly and see what changes." These prompts help you develop your own capacity to sense and respond to your body's needs.
"The best instruction doesn't tell you what to feel—it helps you discover what you're already feeling. When you learn to pay attention, your body becomes your most reliable teacher."
Every body is unique, with its own history, patterns, and possibilities. Our instructors understand this and adapt their guidance to support your individual exploration. What works for one person may not work for another, and that's perfectly natural.
We create an environment where you feel safe to experiment, make discoveries, and progress at your own pace. There's no pressure to keep up with others or achieve specific outcomes.
Bringing full attention to physical practice
When you move with attention, each moment becomes an opportunity for presence. Rather than thinking about what comes next or judging your performance, you simply notice what is happening right now.
This quality of attention naturally develops through practice. As you learn to stay with your sensations and movements, you may find this awareness extending into other areas of your life.
Your breath provides a constant connection to the present moment. By noticing how breath moves through your body as you practice, you create a natural rhythm that guides your movements.
We don't prescribe specific breathing patterns. Instead, we encourage you to observe your natural breath and discover how it relates to your movement.
Taking movement awareness beyond the studio
The real test of movement practice isn't what happens in a studio, but how it affects your daily life. Can you sit at your desk with more ease? Do you notice tension building before it becomes problematic? Can you move through your day with greater comfort and efficiency?
This integration happens naturally as you develop awareness. You begin to notice your movement patterns throughout the day and apply what you've learned in practice. A simple shift in how you stand or reach can make ordinary activities more comfortable.
"Movement practice isn't separate from life—it's preparation for life. Every movement you explore in the studio can inform how you navigate the world outside."
We focus on practices that are sustainable over a lifetime. Rather than intensive training that leads to burnout, we emphasize gentle, consistent exploration that you can maintain indefinitely.
Many people find that even a few minutes of conscious movement each day creates noticeable benefits. These small, regular practices often prove more transformative than occasional intense sessions.
